CPAP Machines 101

Information Guide to Sleep Apnea and the Use of CPAP

CPAP Machines

There are three main variations on the standard CPAP machine available. Some come with heated or passive humidification units available with the CPAP machine.

Auto-adjusting CPAP Machines
Automatically adjusts the air pressure delivered throughout the night; also called auto-titrating CPAP machines. This CPAP machine automatically adjusts to whatever pressure is necessary. Even a weight gain or loss of 10 pounds can change the air pressure needed. A change in your elevation can also have an impact. A standard CPAP machine would have to be reset in this situation.

Bi-level (BiPAP) CPAP Machines
Bi-level (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure) machines deliver air flow to the air passage at different pressures during inhalation (inspiratory pressure) and exhalation (expiratory pressure). Inhalation pressure is higher to keep the airway open, and exhalation pressure is lower to make breathing out easier. Also called BiPAP, which technically is a brand name sold by Respironics.

Variable (VPAP) CPAP Machines A more sophisticated type of bi-level CPAP machine that uses a software algorithm to more accurately stay synchronized with the breathing pattern and to prevent air leakage.
